Now that Qatarās royal family has taken over Harrods, the famed London luxury department store, its already astronomic offerings are becoming even more obscene. The Qataris have done a deal with London yacht brokerage Watkins to offer a range of superyachts and megayachts to the storeās ultra-rich clientele. Along with an alligator skin umbrella and a pair of mink underpants Harrods honchos will be able to pick up a multimillion-dollar yacht right in the store. Yachts on offer range from the $11 million Ron Holland-designed Kestrel 106 built in Turkey to the ultra-cool $165 million 295-ft. Fincantieri project Mars (above) from Italy by London-based H2 Yacht Design team.
Other models on offer include a semi-displacement 213-ft. Heesen superyacht with an interior design by Bannenberg and Rowell, and the 246-ft. Mogambo due for delivery in March 2012. Luxe charters will be offered as well as sales; the new initiative is obviously targeted at the oligarch and oil sheikh set. “There are a lot of potential charterers and purchasers who don’t want to travel to yacht shows and would rather meet with our expert team to discuss potential options without jargon or hard selling,ā Watkinsā MD Adrian McCourt tells Superyacht News. āIts like having Monaco at Harrods.”
