Bill Gates and Qatar Royals Face Off Over Greek Island

Last fall reports surfaced that legendary Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani had inked a deal to buy one of the world’s most beautiful and expensive private islands – Skorpios in Greece. In snagging the property, said to be worth about $190 million according to reports in the European press, the designer was reportedly in competition with the likes of Roman Abramovich and Madonna. Apparently it never went through, however, because the island is back on the market with a pricetag of about $200 million, and this time Bill Gates and Qatar’s royal family are fighting over it, according to Al Arabiya news via the Greek Reporter.

Qatar has been helping Greece with its financial difficulties and aims to acquire some desirable assets in the process. Located in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece, the island formerly belonged to famed Greek shipping billionaire Aristotle Onassis and was the site of his wedding to Jackie Kennedy in 1968. It’s being sold by his granddaughter and heiress, Athina Onassis Roussel, though certain Greek authorities oppose it. There is a lavish villa on the island known as the Pink House which Onassis built for Jackie, along with tennis courts and plush gardens, though most of the island remains undeveloped and pristinely beautiful.
