For three days, we will be focusing on the RM Auction House’s Sports & Classic of Monterey auction taking place the 12th of August. This is day two of posts specifically focusing on those cars, and today’s is an especially impressive collector’s item.
At estimated 450 BHP boasting a Ford 289 cubic inch V8 engine with transaxle four-wheel independent suspension, the Cooper Ford “King Cobra” won the Riverside LA Times Grand Prix with Parnelli Jones. This is the original ’64 Shelby Team King Cobra, and is expected to fetch anywhere from $600,000 to $800,000 in auction. For those of you who do not know the history of these beasts, Carroll Shelby–an upstart road racing opportunist–commissioned a limited run of successful racing cars known as the King Cobras, which were fast, responsive, and won a lot of races. Like many great things, their time was brief but spectacular, lasting only a couple years of dominance before fading into the background.
You can nonetheless own a piece of history with one of these or many other vehicles like it. If you’d like to learn more about the RM Auction House’s Sports & Classic of Monterey auction, click here.
