Turns out Panerai’s new limited edition Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante 44 mm, specially created to celebrate this year’s Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, is getting exposure beyond the sea air: Sylvester Stallone sports the stunning timepiece in his new action flick The Expendables. Stallone is a longtime Panerai fan whose often credited with reviving the brand’s fortunes; special “Slytech” editions have been produced in his honour in the past. The limited Luminor is probably his own watch as opposed to some costume designer’s bright idea.
The watch, a split-second chronograph, complete with chronometer certificate, that counts down the 5 minutes to the start of the regatta, is coated in DLC. The DLC treatment has also been extended to the three buttons, winding crown and lever bridge, the latter being the strong signature feature of Luminor watches with the dual function of protecting the crown and ensuring its watertight seal. Only 500 numbered examples have been produced. In the flick Stallone sports the optional rubber strap which is more suited to fighting bad guys.
