Sikorsky S-76C++ and the future of VIP helicopters

That the private ownership of helicopters and jets is a privilege to a select few is hardly disputed by anyone. What’s more interesting to note, if you’re interested in advertising like I am, are the distinctly different ways that private aviation is marketed depending on what kind of machine you’re talking about. If we’re talking about business jets, their makers and resellers often choose to underscore the high level of comfort and luxury that their aircraft provides. On the other hand, helicopters, even of the private variety, are often marketed as “military-grade machines of doom”, “if it’s good enough for the USMC then it’s good enough for you!” and so forth.

The military angle isn’t very surprising, considering that’s usually what you’d associate helicopters with. I bet you’d have an easier time remembering the Wagner-thundering gunships from Apocalypse Now rather than the fire-bombing planes from that very same movie (let’s ignore how iconic the helicopter scene is, otherwise my thesis doesn’t really hold any water).

American helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky has taken notice. Their S-76C++ was introduced as the ultimate VIP chopper. The first customer? The British Royal Family. Sikorsky has been the helicopter supplier for the Queen for half a century, so the royals were a natural choice.

“[The S-76C++] most closely meets the mission requirements by providing a quiet and comfortable cabin environment, low carbon footprint and best value for money.  We have enjoyed excellent product support from Sikorsky over many years and I look forward to a continued relationship”, says Royal chief pilot (what a title!) Christopher Pittaway. The helicopter features a powerful Turbomeca Arriel 2S2, a luxurious interior and an inventive noise reduction system called Quiet Zone to ensure a comfortable ride.

What is this article about? S-76C++ isn’t a news – it has been produced since 2006. In the end of 2009 production of the next modification S-76D has been started.

Just a tip: The helicopters in that famous scene weren’t Black Hawks, they were Hueys.

Sandy: good call. Pretty shameful, as it’s pretty much my favorite flick-

    Hello:
I found this site and thought maybe an aircraft watcher can help me. I am looking to solve the mystery of a very unusual helicopter I used to see as a kid in the PG County, Maryland area, 1970-73. I had never seen one like it before, nor have I ever seen one since then. I have determined by comparing my vivid memory (swift moving, white with red stripes, rounded looking, fixed-wheeled, jet-style design) to Internet identification photos that the model in question must be the SUD Alouette III. This makes sense as it best matches my memory, it was used for corporate/charter service and my few sightings were of it flying over and quickly descending to land in the distance near a business/industrial park (Industrial City Hyattsville/Bladensburg, Md). It acted as if it were making a runway landing rather than a typical vertical move. I could never pinpoint just where it was landing or who owned it. I am now trying to locate the possible destination, as well as the operator of it. I thought maybe it was a corporate copter for one of the trucking companies in that area? I have discovered there was “one” Alouette listed in Maryland at the Montgomery County Airpark, circa 1970. Does any helicopter buff in this region know of a detailed list of all Alouette models in the region during 1970-1973, as well as have any images? Help solve this mystery!
