The famous Pininfarina X concept car unveiled by the iconic Italian design firm in 1960 has been listed for sale on JamesList by the incredible Aero Toy Store in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for $1.35 million. The one-of-a-kind space age conveyance was constructed by Pininfarina, which has designed nearly every Ferrari built over the past 50 years, to experiment with a revolutionary body and chassis configuration – one wheel in front (for steering), two in the middle, and one in back – forming and X and giving the thing its name.

Under the hood is a fairly standard 43 hp 1100 cc Fiat engine, however, thanks to the innovative design and its exceptional aerodynamics, the X is capable of higher speeds while using less fuel than other vehicles equipped with the same powertrain. While undeniably interesting and attractive, the concept never quite caught on and no manufacturers offered to produce Pininfarina’s project, fearing consumers would be uncomfortable with the unusual auto. It remains however an important piece of automotive and design history for any collector. And who knows, one day we may all be driving X-wheeled cars.
