Whether or not you’re a football fan, it seems that Maradona is one of those characters that transcend the realm of sports by a wide margin. The fail-safe litmus test is the fact that what I know about football, and specifically Maradona’s sporting career, wouldn’t fill the back of a post card. I hear that he scored a goal with his hand once. I also hear that that’s generally considered a foul. Oh well.
Yet, Maradona’s legacy outside the field looms larger in my conscience, especially since having essentially turned into some sort of Castro-esque caricature of himself, to the point of wearing two Rolexes at the same time (although, after Rolex turned down him as a brand ambassador, it seems he’s set his sights on Hublot instead), joining a rather rich eccentric tradition in the process.

However, my sources tell me that there was a time, before his frantic coke binges, massive weight gain, financial troubles and strange bedfellows, where Maradona was simply a brilliant footballer. The Porsche 924 that turned up on JamesList a few days ago is a testament to that fact. It was made in Germany in 1979 and imported by special request of a 19-year-old Maradona the year after. At the time, Maradona played for the Argentinos Juniors apart from his career in the Argentine national team which would last 17 years. He loved and treasured the car for a solid year and a half before selling it before his transferral to Barcelona.

Ever since, the car has been kept in very good condition by serious collectors. The engine packs 125 hp and has a mileage of just below 40,000 miles. If you have $500,000 burning a hole in your pocket, take a closer look at Maradona’s Porsche 924 right here. Papers indicating Maradona as the original owner are included.
