Yes, front wheel drive is safe, serious and boring. It’s really hard nowadays find cheap excitement in the form of motoring. Luckily, Toyota is willing to give it a shot with its new FT-86 concept. Similar in looks to the Lexus LF-A, the Toyota is partnering up with Subaru to keep costs down for maximum enjoyment. The point of making it rear wheel drive is brilliant as there are no real competitors in its class, except for perhaps the Hyundai Coupé and the upcoming VW Bluesport.
The move for safety is undeniably sane but at the same time, some drivers want the choice to be theirs. Not having it thrust upon them because it’s the only option. Wearing your seatbelt, being vigilant, keeping the posted speed limits and knowing how your car behaves on the edge are simple recipies for being a safe driver. But what if you meet all those criterias?

Then you need something more exciting. 4 wheel drive are for offroaders, front wheel drive is for sissies but rear wheel drive is where the skills are shown. Any race car driver of a front wheel driven car will tell you it’s only a matter of technique but so is powersliding through every corner on your way to wherever you’re going. Argue they can, until they’re blue in the face. I know what my choice will be. Rear wheel drive baby, with all systems off!
