Trimarans are pretty nifty. They’ve been around for almost 4000 years in one shape or form, are near-impossible to capsize yet don’t, in my mind, get the attention they deserve.
How great then that there’s quite an example for sale right here on JamesList. The HiQ trimaran, a 60ft beast boasting top speeds around 43 knots, gathered quite a lot of attention in 2007 when it won an impressive list of races in Nordic waters. Noteworthy performances in prestigious tough-condition challenges such as Gotland Round Race, Lidingö Round Race and record-setting runs in both in the Göteborg Offshore Race and Tjörn Round (beating the record with over 40 minutes), caused a media storm.
When asked about the state of Swedish sail racing, Claes “Klabbe” Nylöf was quoted in a 2007 interview as saying: “I feel that sail racing in Sweden is excellent and that we Swedes are bit too humble. Sadly. Just look at it; we have the Victory Challenge, the Ericsson team, we have great olympic sailors. I think our scope is excellent, after all, we are competitive just about everywhere. We just seem to have trouble bringing it all back home and making something of it. Swedish sailors don’t seem to stick together back home, preferring to work a lot more abroad, thus making it hard to notice how much of a major player our country is when it comes to sail racing.”
Sounds neat? Keep checking in on James Spotting and you might just find a treat within the near future.
