Ferrari Unveils the New 458 Italia
After a thunderstorm of rumors, renderings and reckless speculation on the part of the auto blogging world, Ferrari has finally unveiled its long-awaited successor to the F450, dubbed the 458 Italia. Declared to be the fastest production Ferrari ever built, the 458’s advanced 4.5-litre V8 engine with a double clutch and seven speed gearbox kicks out 570 hp at 9,000 rpm and 540Nm at 6000 rpm; that translates into 0-100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds and a maximum velocity of 325 km/h. The “Italia” moniker relates to Ferrari’s hopes the new model will make the mother country proud.
In addition to its fancy new engine, the 458’s chassis and suspension have been reconfigured to incorporate materials such as magnesium and carbon fibre, helping the supercar weigh in at only 1,380 kg and for an enviable power-to-weight ratio of 2.42 kg/hp. As for the exterior, Pininfarina managed to update the look without alienating enthusiasts, with two movable wings as the key feature of an active aerodcynamic system, helping to reduce drag at high speeds, with lightweight carbon ceramic brakes to counterbalance. The car will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September will orders will be taken at €200,000 apiece.
