Rabid Rolls-Royce fans will be familiar with the name of Hans-Günther Zach, who runs his own museum dedicated to the famed marque in Mühlheim/Main, Germany. The old boy has now decided to sell off the whole shebang, including the crown jewel of his collection, the famous “Star of India” (above). The Star is a one-off 1934 Phantom II 40/50 HP Continental “All-Weather Convertible” custom made for the Maharaja of Rajkot. That car alone is expected to fetch as much as €10 million; if it does that would make it the most expensive car in the world.

Among the other 24 Rolls-Royces and 3 Bentleys Zach is accepting bids for through Sept. 15 is a 1926 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Phantom I Open Tourer, built for the Maharaja of Nanpara and known as the “Aluminium Sculpture” because of its highly polished, natural aluminium body and chassis. There’s also a Phantom II Cabriolet “Hunting Car” built for the The Maharajah of Rewa specially made for tiger hunting with a built-in gun rack; and a 1920 40/50 Silver Ghost Coupé de Ville made for Jean Hennessy and later owned by winemaker and noted car collector Baron de Rothschild. Hell, Zach’s even selling the furniture.

€10 million for a PII? Howling at the moon! A nice car, along with many others in the collection, but certainly not that much. I’d think the number would be closer to €300-400K.

[...] Back in July of 2009 we first reported that the famed “Star of India”, a one-off 1934 Phantom II 40/50 HP Continental “All-Weather Convertible” custom made for the Maharaja of Rajkot with coachwork by Thrupp and Maberley finished in saffron ochre with polished aluminum wings, was being offered for sale at about €10 million, making it one of the world’s most expensive cars.
