Bugatti’s Bugatti Up for Auction in Pebble Beach
In August, top-drawer auto auctioneers Gooding & Company will be selling an ultra-rare and unique mint condition 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe, built as a birthday present for founder Ettore Bugatti, during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California. The two tone green and black car, which is being offered without reserve, is expected to fetch several million dollars; Gooding sold a similar model last summer for $8 million. Carefully protected and preserved during World War II, after Ettore Bugatti’s death in 1947 the car was maintained and stored at the Bugatti workshop in Molsheim, France.
In Molsheim the car received factory upgrades as developments progressed. Those included tailored interior accessories and a unique engine and transmission combination, among other improvements. Additionally, the car’s one-off coachwork is believed to be one of the last designs penned by Ettore Bugatti’s son, Jean Bugatti, before his death. Bugatti’s personal Type 57 remains one of the most correct and original examples of the marque in existence; think of it as the 1930s equivalent of a customized Veyron – a pre-war Pur Sang, if you will.
