Breitling Beefs Up the Chronomat

The Breitling Chronomat, one of the world’s most classic men’s sports watches, has gotten beefed up in the form of the Swiss watchmaker’s new Chronomat B01 model. The first Chronomat to feature a Breitling-made (in-house) movement, it’s designed with a new longer profile for a better fit on the wrist. Chronometer-certified by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres), the self-winding, high frequency movement offers 1/4 second, 30 minute, and 12-hour totalizers with a calendar function.
Other features include a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal cover, water resistance to a depth of 500 metres, and a unidirectional ratcheted rotating bezel. The new water resistance feature broadens the watch’s appeal for divers who don’t want to have to switch watches just to do a little underwater exploring. The Swiss watchmaker founded in 1884 now joins the ranks of the elite few with their own in-house movements. And while many will welcome the new B01’s innovations, there are still those who swear by the vintage Chronomat and deride all such newfangled stuff as mere window dressing.
