Before you get too excited about BMW’s 25th anniversary M5 CSL, we’ll break it to you that this is a one-off with no plans to go into production. Doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride though. The CSL is all about minimal weight and maximum speed. That means doing away with little extras like back seats and giving the engine a boost to 5.5-litres via a carbon fiber manifold, bigger air box and oil cooler among others. As a result the CSL’s 5.5-litre V-10 is the largest ever in an M Division car, cranking out 580 hp and about 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

That means 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds and a more responsive, edgier feel in general. To really put the ‘L’ in CSL (Coupé Sport Lightweight) BMW’s engineers shaved nearly 50 kgs off the weight, bringing it down to 1,776 kg thanks to a carbon fibre roof, carbon front seats and a few other choice excisions. A seven-speed double clutch gearbox is operated via F1-style steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. When they’re done daydreaming BMW’s wonks will get back to work on the next-gen M5; word is they’re considering dropping the V-10 in favor of a turbo V8.
