While it was announced sometime ago, the Breguet Marine Royale Alarm watch for 2009 is here. All $42,000 of this luxury sports marine style dive watch, in its shiny glory, can be yours to enjoy. Breguet’s Marine collection has always been a curious look to me. Breguet indicates that the design is based on the real Breguet’s designs for British naval watches back in 1815. The result is a sports watch that feels retro before it feels modern. A unique look that is sure to entertain lovers of Breguet, vintage looks, and luxury timepieces. I’d really have to wear one a bit to see how well the style meshed with me.

What I don’t need convincing of is the high quality construction, brand power, and interesting functions. Breguet goes on and on about how well the alarm function will work under water. That maybe true, but I am wondering what manner of buyer is going to continually submerge both their $40k watch and head under water to hear the alarm noise in action. The alarm function uses the centrally mounted blue tipped gold arrow hand to set the alarm time. There is a window for indication of whether the alarm time is on or off, and a power reserve meter (with applied luminant) for the alarm function only. Pretty standard execution for an alarm, but done in a highly polished manner.

Operating the alarm is easy. You set it via the rubber coated crown at 4 o’clock, and you turn the alarm function on or off via the large pusher, also rubber coated, that is located at 8 o’clock.

Aside from the alarm, the watch has the time, and a rotating diver’s bezel. The 18k rose gold (or white gold) case is 45mm wide and notably water resistant to 300 meters – making it a true diver’s watch. The crystal on the front and back of the watch is sapphire, and inside the watch is an in-house made Breguet Cal. 519R movement that is an automatic and has a 45 hour power reserve. All nicely made of course, with an 18k rose gold machine engraved automatic rotor.

There are times when rubber with gold just doesn’t sit right with me. Other times I applaud the look. This is why Breguet gives you a rubber and leather strap with the watch. Now all you need is the title of “admiral” and you can get yourself one.
